The iPad Mini is not all that Apple unveiled today – they also rolled out an all-new Mac lineup highlighted by an impossibly thin new iMac and a retina display equipped 13″ MacBook Pro. Here are the highlights:
Retina 13″ MacBook Pro:
It’s a MacBook Pro with a retina display! Pricing starts at $1699 for a 2.5GHz processor, 128GB flash storage, integrated Intel graphics, and the aforementioned Retina Display. Gone are the optical drive and 20% of its thickness. It’s also almost a full pound lighter. It is available for order today.
New Mac mini:
The Mac mini update was less exciting, but certainly welcome. Now the $599 starting point gives you a quad core processor and the latest in Intel graphics. It’s not as exciting, but at least the Mac mini is no longer outdated.
New iMac:
This is the news that made me gasp. The new iMac is seriously thin. It looks like they blew up the iPad and mounted it on a base. Pricing starts at $1299 for the 21.5″ version, and that gets you the new “Fusion Drive” (a hybrid of flash and disk storage that gives you the best of both worlds) and discrete graphics (yes!). So, it’s gorgeous, powerful, and still a bargain. However, with the thinness you lose the disk drive and the SD card slot is moved to the back. Otherwise, it’s a superior device in every regard, including new stereo speakers.
